Molly Ringwald reveals the movie line that fans quote the most when they meet her in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE

“That’s a line that seems like it has resonated with a lot of people,” the actress says

Ringwald starred in popular ‘80s hits such as 1984’s Sixteen Candles, 1985’s The Breakfast Club and 1986’s Pretty in Pink, among others

Molly Ringwald fans have found solace in one of her most notable film quotes.

The actress, 58, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that when she meets fans and they quote a line from one of her iconic 1980s films, it’s oftentimes the same.

“I think the one that gets quoted to me the most often would be, ‘I just want to let them know that they didn’t break me,’ from Pretty in Pink,” Ringwald says, referring to the line spoken in the 1986 romantic comedy-drama.

The quote is uttered by Ringwald’s character, Andie Walsh, while she is getting ready to go to the prom alone.

Pretty in Pink follows a working-class high school senior whose romance with a wealthy student faces backlash.

Of her famous quote in the film, Ringwald says, “That’s a line that seems like it has resonated with a lot of people, because high school is really hard.”

“I have two juniors in high school, and a lot of it hasn’t changed. A lot of it has changed, but there are certain things that have not changed at all,” the mother of three continues, referring to her twins, Adele and Roman, 17, whom she shares with husband Panio Gianopoulos. Along with Pretty in Pink, Ringwald starred in other popular ‘80s hits such as 1984’s Sixteen Candles and 1985’s The Breakfast Club.

When it comes to being known for her role in the Brat Pack, a group of young actors who frequently appeared together in 1980s coming-of-age films, and her overall status as an icon from the decade, Ringwald tells PEOPLE, “I think that it’s definitely a compliment, even if I don’t see myself that way.”

“I just consider myself a working actor and a working mother,” she adds. “I don’t see myself as legendary at all, but it’s nice.”

“It’s definitely a compliment,” continues Ringwald, who has recently partnered with Pfizer to raise awareness about pneumococcal pneumonia.
