Nicholas Galitzineenjoyed adding muscle to play He-Man inMasters of the Universe, but he was eager to quit his intense diet regimen when filming wrapped.

"It wasn't mentally difficult. I was so mentally ready to eat something disgusting," Galitzine, 31, tells PEOPLE at the film's world premiere in Los Angeles on Monday, May 18. "I want to say I had a combination of sushi and pizza, and I just was like, 'Give it. Give it all to me' So no, it wasn't hard to go there. Given the fact that my next director did not want me to look like He-Man for his movie, he said, 'Eat as much as you want and stop working out.' "

When asked if that first cheat meal lived up to his hopes, Galitzine adds, "Better. Food is everything to me. It truly is."

Known for romance roles inRed, White & Royal BlueandThe Idea of You, Galitzine takes over the He-Man mantle from Dolph Lundgren, who last played the character in the 1987 film of the same name. He-Man is the protagonist of theMasters of the Universefranchise, which includes toys, comic books and decades of animated television, in addition to the new movie.

The British actor previously described his experience training to play He-Man as "the hardest thing I've ever done" while speaking with PEOPLE in December. "It was a daily challenge, but there is something incredibly empowering about committing to something so heavily," he said at the time. "I've never had a challenge like that before, which really every single day you have to wake up and you can see the peak of the mountain vaguely, but especially when you're bulking. I think it would be insincere for me to say that it was easy."

Though Galitzine emphasized the experience proved positive overall, he did say he was not interested in maintaining his size for the movie "all year round."
