Travolta, 72, debuted hisviral accessoryat theCannes Film Festival, immediately sparking lots of conversation online.
The Oscar-nominated actor made his directorial debut with the filmPropeller One-Way Night Coach, a semi-autobiographical story starring his real-life daughter,Ella Bleu, and the movie premiered at the film festival on Friday, May 15. He shared that the new look was intentional on his part.
“I have over 50 years of me at events and happenings, and I can't tell the difference with what I wore or look,” Travolta explained toWillie Geiston theTodayshow on Wednesday, May 20. “‘What year is that? What movie is that?' And then I said, ‘You know what, I'm making a directorial debut.' ”
Noting that he looked up “directors and berets” online, Travolta said it was a common look for famous directors.
“I said, ‘Well, I'm not an actor this time, I'm a director.' Show up like a director,” he recalled. “So I did that, and that's really the simplicity of it.”
And while Travolta felt confident in the look,Todayshow weatherman Roker couldn't help but tease him about the style. When the NBC morning show cut to Roker, he was wearing a white beret while preparing to report the weather.
“Oh, Al!” Travolta said, seemingly caught off-guard. “Go for it, man.”
Roker got into the look, testing out his French.

“Wee wee, monsieur. I'm being directed by an award-winning director. I love it.” Roker quipped, adding, “What's my motivation, John?”
And while he may have rocked the beret as a joke, Roker admitted, “Actually I do have a number of berets. I've been wearing them before.”

Travolta has marked the new directorial stage of his career with a series of berets, and it's been a time of celebration for the actor.
He was recentlysurprised with an Honorary Palme d'Orat Cannes.
“I've never been more proud to win an award!” he captioned anInstagram photoof himself smiling as he held up the hardware. “To me the Cannes Palme d'Or award has always represented art at its finest. It is beyond a humbling experience.”
He also shared onThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallonthat the honor was a complete surprise.
"I didn't expect this at all," said Travolta. "It was complete secret ... No one in my team knew."
Propeller One-Way Night Coachpremieres globally on Apple TV on May 29.
