After rampant speculation regarding which Bridgerton sibling will take the lead in season five, fans finally have their answer: The upcoming season, now in production, will follow Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and her second-chance romance with her late husband's cousin Michaela (Masali Baduza).
"It feels groundbreaking. Obviously, there are a lot of great shows that have depicted queer love. We're not the first by any means," showrunner Jess Brownell says. "But to make an entireBridgertonseason about a sapphic relationship feels huge."
The official logline is as follows: "In Season 5, Francesca decides to reenter the marriage mart for practical reasons, two years after the death of her beloved husband, Lord John Stirling. But when John's cousin Michaela returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate, Fran's complicated feelings will have her questioning whether to stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions."

The season will be adapted from Julia Quinn's novelWhen He Was Wicked, though the character of Michael has been genderbent to Michaela.

In the final moments of season four, Michaela leaves London. "She's one of those people where the emotions are just, they're too much. She can't handle them," Baduza tellsTown & Country. I think Michaela is very used to pushing her emotions down, emotions that she's not really comfortable with. She wants to just see lightness and happiness all the time, every time, because she's going through so much internal struggle. When she can't do that, physically, she just has to get away."
Season five will pick up two years later; it has not been announced what other main characters will return.
